Week 9: SD vs. SF . . .
Scoreboard watching has become commonplace with SD as of late. However, this game against DIV rival SF was not the time to dwell on the fate of others as they relate to SD’s plight. SD had its hands full with SF in a 27-21 win that saw Emmitt Smith run for 265 yards and 4 TDs. Much of the game was fast paced with SF coming on late to tie the game at the half, 14-14, with Bo Jackson, Mooncricket, and Brent Jones doing the damage. SD had a chance to keep some distance between itself and SD, however, Jessie Hester’s KR fumble at the 5 yard line in the 3rd QTR changed the dynamic of the game as SF quickly capitalized with a TD strike to Brent Jones to make it 21-14, SF. SD roared back on the heels of Emmitt Smith to tie the game early in the 4th QTR. On SF’s ensuing drive, SD made some key stops against SF as they went for a 4th down conversion that failed to materialize. SD’s Jessie Hester made amends with a 45 yard reception to set up SD for a GW FG. However, John Kasay’s FG bounced off the uprights to send the game into OT. In OT, SD wins the toss and SF inadvertently onside kicks the ball to Willie Gault who takes the ball to the 20 yard line. Emmitt Smith then dodges several defenders to score the GW TD. “We dodged a bullet today for sure” exclaimed Trace Armstrong who had SD’s only sack. “We had our chances early and late. This is what we have got to work on if we are to turn that corner, so to speak- closing teams out or keeping them at bay. We also have to perform better on both sides of the ball. We have been very inconsistent. We cannot rely on putting up 20-plus every game, as everybody saw last week (CIN). We cannot afford to have one identity with our upcoming games.” When asked about the lack of play-calling to compliment the QB position, Boomer Esiason shrugged off any worries of his role: “I am doing what I am asked to do right now. I will get my chances soon enough.” GG arn. A very GG with regard to good ol’ fashioned play. I was a tapping fool when Hester caught that pass. Nevertheless, the onside kick was key to the game- unfortunately. I wish you the best of luck the rest of the way. CPR
