The 1992 WTF College Draft: Available Wide Receivers
Name: Desmond Howard Position: WR College: Michigan Outlook: This upset winner of the Heisman Trophy has the speed to house it every time he touches the rock. In college, Howard was just simply too fast for opposing teams to defend. Something tells me that Wayne Haddix, Deion Sanders, Rod Woodson, and friends will certainly be able to keep up with his track-star speed. And that begs the question…can Howard actually catch the ball in coverage or will his talents be best utilized on reverses and in the return game? Most agree that Howard’s impact will certainly not come as a possession receiver. Quarterbacks throwing to Howard will need to be careful to make sure he’s open before launching it in his direction. Pickens has the speed to burn a DB deep and the size to get physical and catch the ball in coverage. He also possesses incredible leaping ability, jumping to get many balls that would be six inches over most receivers’ heads. Pickens will need to get matched up with the right quarterback to ensure success in the WTF but there’s a really strong chance that he’ll be a premier receiver in the league within a few seasons. He’s a precise route runner, has excellent speed, and can catch the ball in coverage with relative ease. As with any small-school product, there’s always the chance that the higher level of competition will prove too daunting, but my guess is that in fifteen seasons, we’ll be looking at a WTF Hall of Famer here. And hell, even Smith’s worst case scenario is better than some teams’ #1 receiver! This guy should probably be drafted in the top 5, and maybe at #1. He could also be a starter for several teams. Hawkins isn’t going to wow anyone with his talent but he’ll definitely provide an upgrade at WR for somebody. RS MS BC RC % 31 25 50 38 80 31 31 50 44 20 Tecmo Comparison: Dwight Stone Name: Todd Kinchen Position: WR College: LSU Outlook: Kinchen is a mediocre prospect from a middling college program at LSU. Chances are likely that he’ll provide an upgrade for someone, but not a significant one. Worth a shot as a late rounder. The man will catch nearly everything thrown his way. Could be a real sleeper pick for someone. RS MS BC RC % 25 19 50 38 80 25 25 50 44 20 Tecmo Comparison: Vernon Joines Name: Torrance Small Position: WR College: Alcorn State Outlook: As a third or fourth receiving option, Small could deliver the goods. He won’t win any track meets but he he’s a decent possession receiver. RS MS BC RC % 31 31 50 50 50 38 38 50 56 25 25 25 50 44 25 Tecmo Comparison: Rob Moore Name: Eric Blount Position: WR College: North Carolina Outlook: Blount will find himself on the outside looking in, more than likely, when WTF rosters are filled out for 1992. RS MS BC RC % 25 19 50 38 80 25 25 50 44 20 Tecmo Comparison: Al Edwards Name: Chris Walsh Position: WR College: Stanford Outlook: Walsh is primarily known for his skills as a gunner on special teams, which isn’t going to help him make a WTF squad. Still, there are worse options as a fourth receiver than Walsh. RS MS BC RC % 25 25 50 44 80 31 31 50 44 20 Tecmo Comparison: Chris Calloway Name: Nate Singleton Position: WR College: Grambling State Outlook: An unpolished player with poor fundamentals, Singleton will find it difficult to latch on to the 30 man roster for a team, but looks like a solid candidate for membership on a practice squad. RS MS BC RC % 31 31 50 38 80 31 38 50 44 20 Name: Cedric Tillman Position: WR College: Alcorn State Outlook: A college teammate of Torrance Small, Tillman is a similar, though somewhat inferior, talent who should sneak his way onto a roster or practice squad for the 1992 season. RS MS BC RC % 31 31 50 44 80 25 25 50 38 10 31 38 50 50 10 Tecmo Comparison: James Dixon
