The 1992 WTF College Draft: Available Quarterbacks
You guys know the drill...here are the available QBs with their prospective ratings for the 1992 draft. RS/RP/HP/Accuracy will be the same for all QBs (25/69/13/50 respectively). These ratings are FINAL unless the Draft Committee and I decide that there's a need for a slight change. I am planning on releasing one position per week until the end of the season. Here goes... Name: David Klingler Position: QB College: Houston Outlook: Klingler is a gunslinger of a QB who comes fresh off of a stellar college career for the Houston Cougars, where he set many collegiate records. The run-and-shoot offense employed by Houston may not translate well to WTF and may cause Klingler some growing pains as a pro. Klingler possess a strong arm with the ability to fit balls into tight coverage as well as decent pocket presence and scrambling ability. It isn’t likely that Klingler will set WTF afire as he did to the collegiate ranks, but as a second-round selection, Klingler could provide some team with their QB of the future or even a decent chance at a quality starter now. He is generally regarded as a scrambler with poor technique, but some think that Maddox, after a little bit of seasoning, has the tools to become a more traditional pocket passer. Teams in need of a backup QB would be wise to take a flier on Maddox late in the draft. Blundin will struggle to make a team. MS PS PC APB % 13 38 31 31 80 13 44 38 38 20 Tecmo Comparison: Jack Trudeau Name: Craig Erickson Position: QB College: Miami (Fla.) Outlook: In college, Erickson proved himself a winner, leading Miami to the national title in 1989 before eventually losing his job to this year’s Heisman candidate Gino Torretta. That should say it all with regard to Erickson though—if he can’t hold his job at the college level, his prospects for success at the next level are, perhaps, slim. He’ll more than likely serve as a backup in this league. MS PS PC APB % 13 44 38 38 50 19 50 44 44 25 13 38 31 31 25 Tecmo Comparison: Stan Humphries Name: Casey Weldon Position: QB College: Florida State Outlook: Weldon comes to the WTF as a product of Bobby Bowden’s winning tradition at Florida State, where he put up consistently strong numbers and was the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner last season. Many say he was aided, throughout his stay at FSU, by an unusually strong set of wide receivers, including current Chicago Bear Lawrence Dawsey. His game may have been tailor-made for the college level against more porous defenses—but the strong defensive backs in WTF will eat Weldon alive. MS PS PC APB % 13 38 31 31 80 13 44 38 38 15 13 50 44 50 5 Tecmo Comparison: Jay Schroeder, minus the pass speed Name: Jeff Blake Position: QB College: East Carolina Outlook: Jeff Blake probably has the best chance of any of the QBs in this draft of being a breakout star. The man can run and showed promise at completing the deep ball while guiding the East Carolina Pirates to some national recognition. Some scouts are unimpressed with Blake’s talent, comparing him to New Orleans’ much maligned incumbent QB Don Majkowski due to his lofty, high-arcing passes. That said, Blake should be a first round selection for a team needing a talented young QB and should be groomed as a future star. MS PS PC APB % 25 38 50 50 50 25 44 56 50 20 31 38 50 50 10 19 50 50 44 10 13 31 44 38 10 Tecmo Comparison: Don Majkowski Name: Kent Graham Position: QB College: Ohio State Outlook: Graham has the potential to be a starter in WTF after spending the last couple seasons with the Ohio State Buckeyes. This former Notre Dame top recruit will, however, more likely find work as a backup. No doubt Graham finds himself on a WTF roster come next season. MS PS PC APB % 13 38 44 50 60 13 44 50 50 20 13 31 38 50 20 Tecmo Comparison: Steve Walsh Name: Bucky Richardson Position: QB College: Texas A&M Outlook: Richardson is a scrambler whose renegade style is ill-suited to the pro game. It may take him a while to adjust to WTF, and potential owners should be aware that Richardson’s accuracy and pass speed are pretty awful. His speed could find him a home on a WTF roster in 1992. MS PS PC APB % 19 38 31 31 50 19 44 38 38 20 25 50 44 44 10 13 31 25 31 20 Tecmo Comparison: Timm Rosenbach Name: Brad Johnson Position: QB College: Florida State Outlook: Casey Weldon may have been the starter for the Seminoles this past season, but Brad Johnson is perhaps the most talented QB in this year’s draft. With deadly accuracy and excellent mechanics, it’s likely Johnson will be a fixture in WTF for years to come. Critics of Johnson’s suggest that he sometimes plays a little bit too safe with the football, choosing not to unleash his accurate deep ball often enough. Still, he’s a solid player with great upside who could be a Top 10 selection in the draft. One additional word of warning….Johnson is a little bit older than the average draftee…he’ll be 24 years old for his rookie campaign. MS PS PC APB % 13 50 56 50 50 13 56 63 50 25 13 44 50 50 15 13 38 44 50 10 Tecmo Comparison: Steve Deberg Name: T.J. Rubley Position: QB College: Tulsa Outlook: Rubley comes to WTF as a largely unheralded player from a minor Division I college program. It is unlikely he’ll find his way onto a roster. MS PS PC APB % 13 38 31 31 70 13 31 25 25 20 19 44 44 38 10 Tecmo Comparison: Jack Trudeau Name: Ty Detmer Position: QB College: BYU Outlook: A former Heisman Trophy winner and the holder of 59 NCAA records at the QB position, Detmer’s awe-inspiring college career would seem to point to a high probability of success in the WTF. However, most scouts think Detmer is far too small at the QB position to be a successful pro, and he will be relegated to backup duty. And at 25, he’s already a little old to be building a future around. Still, there’s no doubt that Detmer is a talented QB and for some teams he’ll be able to come in and push for a starting job immediately. Some think he’ll not only be a weapon as a passer but could also use his legs to pick up pivotal yardage. Time will tell, but it looks like Brown could be a second or third round steal for a team in need. MS PS PC APB % 13 50 44 44 60 19 56 50 50 20 13 44 38 44 20 Tecmo Comparison: John Fourcade
