ROUND 1: Bengals vs Bills BENGALS 10, BILLS 7
Great defensive duel in this one.
Bills get the ball to start the game and go 3 and out.
Bengals would put together a long drive and score a FG. 3-0.
Bills would take the lead right before the half on a Bailey TD reception where he just eluded the interception attempt of Fulcher. 7-3 Bills.
Bengals get the ball after the half and look to the legs of Jim Everett to move the ball against a tough Bills defense. Everett probably scrambled for 50 yards on this drive which took nearly the entire 3rd quarter, ending in a short Everett-to-Mark Jackson strike for 6. 10-7 Bengals.
Bills would get the ball and drive to midfield and would eventually be faced with a long 4th and 21. They call the pass 1 play and hit the TE Aaron Craver who was wide open, but the slow, rumbling TE could only manage 20 yards on the reception before being gang-tackled just short of the first down marker. The ball belonged to the Bengals, with the lead, with 3 minutes to go.
With Leonard Russell in bad condition, the Bengals did not want to risk a fumble on a running play so they went to the skies, hoping that some long passes would drain the clock. The first long pass was incomplete and a second attempt would be tipped at the line of scrimmage. On 3rd down I faked like I was going to go long to a WR but opted to try to hit RB2 over the middle. Brooks read my mind perfectly and got in there to break up the play. I was faced with 4th and 10 and hence had to punt.
Bills got the ball with just over a minute to play and went to the ground in what I presume to be an attempt to get into FG range. The Bengals, playing prevent defense, were surprised by this development, and even more surprised that OL Steve Wallace picked up a Bailey fumble to keep the Bills' chances alive. They had time for one more play with 11 seconds to go and they pick the pass 3 shotgun bomb. But the Bengals were wise to it, snuffing out the play by calling it themselves and the ball would drop incomplete, far from the endzone, and the Bengals would hold on to win this thriller.
Excellent game Brookston and best of luck with your offseason and in 1993.
Bengals move to the NFC Championship game for the 3rd straight season!

it was a ref's decision game in my eyes (as most of the bitter big-game-losers think). craver clearly crossed the chain and the bengals knew it. there was nothing anyone could do about it.
it was good play calling by both teams, and the bengals' blitzes came at just the right times.
grrrrrreat game, cats. how we shall dance next season if the division doesn't get decimated!
