MVP Voting
nominees.... Jim Everett Barry Sanders Boomer Joey Browner Derrick Thomas

LordSummerisle- 10-23-2007

I'll vote for Barry just so I'm not voting for my own guy. But keep in mind....Everett was further ahead of the 2nd best QB (Moon) than Barry was ahead of the 2nd best RB (Emmitt). Something to keep in mind... Since defense has its own award I'm not compelled to consider defenders for the MVP.

Sandman! Where's the love for the guy?

LordSummerisle- 10-23-2007

Sandman! Where's the love for the guy? You didn't play Everett.

Once again Barry gets no love from his peers. He ran for 500 more yards than Jim threw for and scored 38 TDs on the year. Nobody was more valuable in this league to their team than Barry.

brookstonfowler- 10-23-2007

barry, for getting the underdogs to the SB

Tough one. . . . However, put it in this perspective: Could Opus have the same success with a back like Cleveland Gary or Dalton Hilliard? Could Lord put up similar numbers with Obrien or Steve Deberg? Barry may be more valuable in this case.

Tough one. . . . However, put it in this perspective: Could Opus have the same success with a back like Cleveland Gary or Dalton Hilliard? Could Lord put up similar numbers with Obrien or Steve Deberg? Barry may be more valuable in this case. Not sure I follow the logic here. It's irrelevant what I could've done with O'brien or Deberg seeing as I didn't have O'brien or Deberg. I had Everett and his stats look pretty good. Could Opus have done the same with Hilliard or Gary? I don't know, he didn't have Hilliard or Gary. He had Sanders. His stats also look pretty good. If you want to pick nits, the way I see it: Running Backs better than Barry: Bo Quarterbacks better than Everett: Randy, Montana, Kelly, Moon, Marino, Boomer, Kosar at the very least. Hence the achievements by Barry are the "more expected" and the achievements by Everett are the "more extraordinary." I think the ultimate question for choosing the MVP comes down to this... Is the MVP the player who was most valuable to his particular team, or the player who was the league's most impressive player that particular season? No doubt the most valuable player to his particular team is Barry. No doubt he wins the award for Seahawks MVP. Was he the league's most impressive player? That's a little more nebulous. What defines impressive? Do we look at the raw statistics? If so, I see Barry averaged an impressive 11.8 yards per carry and piled up 2760 yds including playoffs. I also see Mel Gray on the same list who averaged 12.8 yards per carry and accounted for 2250 yards of total offense on 60 fewer touches. Was Barry even the best running back? Rushing yardage seems to suggest so, but if you dig a bit deeper the issue becomes cloudier. Everett was unquestionably the best QB. 39 touchdowns to only 4 interceptions (Tecmophile says 6, but 2 of the INTs were by Lott after the playoff game crapped out vs. Arn with a minute to go and we played a junk game to grab the .sta during which I fucked around). Without that Arn game in the mix he completed 65% of his passes which is almost unheard of in Tecmo. And as previously stated, he's not even one of the top 5 QBs on the ROM, attribute-wise. It is a tough call and I will say nothing further. I will let the voters speak!!!

I am one that does not consider MVP to mean "best stats". I really think it was the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER. How could anyone deny that Barry was severely more valuable? I say Lord could have put up those numbers with Brister practically, while there is no AFC Championship for Opus without Barry IMO. Therefore, Barry was more valuable.
