49ers 1992 end of season meeting - annual dinner The 49ers had their annual staff and players meeting - dinner followed by the team awards ceremony last night that went through each position w/ a breakdown on each..
QB -
Warren Moon B+
He's starting to get up there in years but still putting up great numbers.
4 ints the final 2 games really hurt him as he had only 3 all season after week 14.
Going into his 3rd year of a 4 year contract so next season will be his final that aging won't affect him.
Steve DeBerg - C+
Had an amazing season filling in for Moon when he was injured getting a win over the Dallas Cowboys.
The oldest QB in the WTF will most likely retire after this season, but if can dodge a bullet and come back would love to have his services for one more year.
Comeback player of the year award
RB -
BO Jackson - A
He got injured a couple of times that really hurt the team, but his contribution was signif. when he was in the games as SF finally had an option other than Moon passing the ball.
1926 yards rushing, which if did't miss 2 games bc of injury would have easily broken the 2,000 yard mark.
24 rushing TDs and averaged 10.9 yards per carry.
Came in 2nd place behind Brent Jones in team MVP voting, but took home the Most Improved Player after shattering his stats w/ New England last season.
Tom Rathman - B+
His rushes went down signif. w Bo on the team this year, but he had some very nice receptions and took care of returning the kickoffs nicely all season long.
After being plagued w/ injuries last season didn't go down even 1x this year.
Special Teams player of the Year Award
Sammie Smith - B
He didn't get much action this season, but the one game he stepped in for BO while injured vs the Browns he came up big rushing for over 100 yards and made the Browns defense look silly trying to stop him on a 13 carries for 123 yards.
Ernest Byner - F
Not used at all this season after abeing drafted at 50ms and since has aged 2x and at 38ms.
WRs -
Mike Pritchard and Ricky Sanders D+
Both WRs didn't catch enough balls thrown to them to be a signif. contribution to the offense.
There were 2 games that at the end of the 4th quarter each missed wide open passes from Moon that would have sealed victories but instead ended up being losses. These 2 both have a lot of off season work to do if want to be on the roster next year!
TE -
BRENT JONES A++
He is the leagues top TE for 2 years running now. He had more receptions that all but 2 or 3 WRs. Pretty good resumee since talking about the likes of Jerry Rice, Andre Rison, Sterling Sharpe, etc. that he had more catches than.
He is SFs MVP for 1992 and deservingly so. Thanks for another tremendous year Mr Jones.
Rodney Holman - C
Part of the Bo from New England deal to fill the spot left open by TE Cash-
Holman was thrown in. He came in the game less than 10 plays all season but pulled down some very nice passes, 4 receptions for 48 yards. A nice surprise having him on the team w/ his veteran presense in the locker room.
OL - B+
The addition of 2 rookies made the O line solid along w last year's Rookie and veterans Doug Widell and Jim Ritcher.
They did a solid job blocking for BO and protecting Moon while he was in the pocket. Doug Widell's 69rs (highest in all of the WTF for an O Lineman)and 44ms made him the higest paid Lineman on the team bc of his contribution at kickoff returns that Rathman piggybacks off of.
DL - F
Nothing special here as Bob Nelson aged last season and only 1 sack this season, in the final game to boot.
NOthing from the other 2 guys except for a couple of fumble recoveries.
Karl Wilson after aging last season got 1 sack this year in 16 games, which is better than rookie Marc Boutte who didn't get a single sack.
Look for a draft pick this season to be used on a starting DLman
LB - C
Bill Romanowski, R Childress, Talley, and Ellison did NOT play a good season for LB stats, but they did their job as best they could.
ROmo went down from being top 10 in sacks the past 2 years and the addition of Talley w his 44 int made a difference as the opposing QBs didn't dump the ball off to the RB when he was near.
Ellison was a body out there and that's about it after aging last season. Look for this to be his final WTF season.
Childress who played his 2nd season after aging is in his final year or two before retiring, look for him to be less of an option on D next season too.
DBs- D+
Ronnie Lott, nothing else can be said here as the other 3 didn't do a dam thing except intercept the ball 1x (Reggie Rutland 44int)
Lott had another solid year and to everyone's surprise had more sacks than ints. He's going into the 2nd year of his 3 year contract so after next season's ceremonies we'll see how much longer he'll be around. A - for Lott this season as his int's (2 ints) just weren't enough to make a big enough contribution. Had a 3rd int that was fumbled and didn't come up on his stats.
Since the first WTF season when Lott lead the league for 15 games w/ 9 INTs when he was at 50int, and now since being at 56int after Prog. Gain has only pulled down 4 INTS in 2 seasons since.
A dissapointment to all and hoping to get back to a respectful 5-7 next season.
Ronie Lott got the Defensive Player of the Year Award, his 2nd in 3 years.
The team had the #1 overall offense in the WTF w. it being basically split down the middle between passing and rushing yards. Too balanced in many ppl's opinion so look for one to step down and the oter to step it up next season.
8-8 season that could just as easily been 11-4 had a few breaks gone their way.
Wins over:
San Diego Chargers - week 1
Clevland Browns - without Bo in the lineup thrilling comeback -OT win
Giants 2x - 4 wins in 2 seasons over this team, SF is their Daddy
Dallas Cowboys - 38 - 24 win, Steve DeBerg game MVP for injured Moon
Washington Redskins - couldn't wait for 2nd meeting after giving first game away in final minute then OT
Philly Eagles - Bo got injured halftime, Brent Jones big game
Atlanta Falcons - 35 - 0 season finale
Lost to:
Buffalo - fumble while about to score was the difference
KC - Eamon outplayed me, a closer game than score
San Diego - lost by a TD after Fumble, CoolP outplayed me though, no excuses
Broncos 2x - Missed open WR late in 4th to seal victory after leading all game
Houston - Lefty played a better game than me 33-28, Brent Jones a GIANT game in the loss
Redskins - a heartbreaker in OT after leading all game
GB - after being mathematically eliminated from playoffs team didn't come to play week 15 running BO only 7x and tossing to double covered Brent Jones all game = 3 ints of Moon
Look for this team to break the 8-8 routine after 2 years in a row of that record and make it back to the playoffs next season duplicating it's season 1 in the WTF w/ a 10-6 record again.
